What Is the Problem
With Utilities?

They Keep Going Up--
From 6 to 50 % Per Year
National Average 20% Per Year Increase
It seems like the price of our utilities keep going up all the time. We just don't seem to have any control over them! It is hard to believe that there are parts of the nation that suffer up to 50% rate increases! The only thing we can do is help lower the costs in our own homes.

This picture shows you where your energy dollars go in an average home. We should be a little more careful with turning off the lights around the house when we aren't in the room. The utility companies have suggested that we put a blanket around our hot water heater. This will lower the cost of heating our water in our home up to 9%. It is amazing how much hot water we all use in our homes. But it is still heating and cooling our home that uses the biggest percentage of our energy.

The first thing we have to understand is that there is a basic law of nature that says heat always transfers towards cold. Most people, like I did, thought the cold came into the house to keep the furnace running. It is just the opposite! In winter, the heat getting out of our homes is what keeps the furnace running. In summer, it is the heat coming in our homes that keeps the air-conditioner running.
Heat is Transferred Four Ways:
The four ways heat is transferred are conduction, convection, radiation, and infiltration.
Conduction is simply when two solid objects touch each other, heat is transferred through the objects. A good example is when the stove gets hot, heat is transferred to the teapot.
Convection is heat movement through the air, occurring when air is warmed. The warm air expands, becomes less dense and rises. So when the furnace turns on, heat goes up to the ceiling. There are two ways to get heat down where we need it. A ceiling fan is one and the other is to go over to your thermostat and turn it up a few degrees. We all know what happens if we turn it passed that pre-determined number that we set it at.. the fuel bill at the end of the month is higher than we would like it to be.
Radiation is the most comfortable type of heat. It travels in a straight line till it is reflected or absorbed. Everything radiates heat, your bodies, chairs, tables, walls, and drapes. Everything collects heat and radiates it away. An example of radiant heat is a quartz space heater. Remember the radiators we used to have in every room? They would radiate heat in all directions. It was just as warm on the floor as it was through the rest of the house.

Infiltration is heat transferred by air movement through leaky doors, windows, outlets, etc. The tighter the house the less heat transferred.

This is why your furnace runs in the winter. Conduction is where your drywall is touching 2x4's. Convection is the heat loss around your windows, doors, cracks in the foundation, and up the chimney. The biggest loss of convection heat is your front door! Every time we open it, we lose heat. Radiant heat loss (the most comfortable type of heat) is the biggest reason your furnace runs in the winter.

In summer time the percentages change: Conduction stayed the same (same drywall touching 2x4's); Convection is less than 1%; Radiant heat gain is the main reason the air-conditioner runs. On a 90 degree day the shingles on the house can get up to 175 degrees, conducting heat into your home and keep

We have learned the biggest reason for the air-conditioner to run in the summer is radiant heat gain. And in the winter the furnace runs to combat radiant heat loss. Insulation, new windows, new siding, and caulking take care of conduction and convection, but very little of radiant heat loss or gain.

Our solution is Therma-Shield Radiant Barrier. One of the best ways to bake a turkey on the holidays is to put aluminum foil over the breast of the turkey. The foil will keep out the direct heat to enable it to be nice and moist. I think we have all been to a restaurant and had a baked potato that was so hot we couldn't eat it right away! The heat was held in the potato by the aluminum foil. Therma-Shield Radiant Barrier reflects heat out (like the aluminum foil on the turkey) in the summer and reflects heat in (like foil around the baked potato) in the winter.
This picture represents your attic without Therma-Shield Radiant Barrier. The heat comes down through the attic into your home and kicks the air-conditioner on. Why isn't the insulation holding out the heat? We need to remember how insulation works. It only absorbs the heat to try to stop it. Insulation works like a sponge with water. Once the sponge is full of water it becomes useless. When the insulation is full of heat it, too, becomes useless. What happens to your air-conditioner when you get 2 or 3 hot days in a row? Answer: It runs all the time! Did you ever ask yourself this question? Why is the air-conditioner running at 3 AM when the sun went down at 8 PM that night? Answer: The sun goes down at 8 PM and if it is cool enough the insulation starts releasing heat, not only up, but all directions, even down into your home. Before it releases all the heat here comes the heat again the next morning and adds to it!

Instead of allowing all that heat in your home, you need to put Therma-Shield Radiant Barrier in the attic to keep the heat from getting into the insulation. If you can keep the insulation cooler, your home should be cooler, too. Saving you money and keeping you more comfortable. Every satellite that goes into outer space has a shiny protective barrier on it. The Astronauts space suit keeps the body heat in, and reflects the sun's heat away. Firemen have shiny protective suits, so they can be closer to fires to get them out faster.

In the winter the same thing happens, only in the opposite direction. Your heat source comes out of the furnace, up to the insulation and out through the roof. If you live in areas that get a lot of snow in the winter, you will notice that some homes have snow on the roofs longer that others. If they are losing snow off the roof very quickly, they might as well put $$ on the arrows going out through the top of their roof. Furnace men say, "Every btu that comes out of the furnace eventually gets out of the home". It just makes sense.

Instead of allowing all the heat out of your home, you need to put Therma-Shield Radiant Barrier in the attic to keep the heat in your home. Saving you money and keeping you more comfortable. Still, "Every btu that comes out of the furnace eventually gets out of the home". But with Therma-Shield Radiant Barrier in the attic, it will keep the heat in longer, recycling the heat. We should all be into recycling any thing!

Therma-Shield Radiant Barrier was tested in all the areas that the average building owner would experience. These tests are over an R-19 insulation, the minimum that homes should have. If we can lower our electrical and fuel consumption, it stands to reason that we thus lower our utility bill at the end of the month. We have even installed Therma-Shield Radiant Barrier in homes having less than R-19 insulation with great results, showing that this product has great capability with little existing insulation in place.
